Gauge is how big YOUR stitches come out with a given yarn and hook — and it is the one number that decides whether a finished project matches the size the pattern promised. Count the stitches in your swatch, measure it, and this page does the arithmetic: your gauge, how many stitches to start a project of any width, and which way to change hooks to match a pattern. 1. Your gauge, from a swatch

Crochet a practice square bigger than your hand — chain about 20 and work rows until it is roughly as tall as it is wide. Then count full stitches across the middle (edges lie), measure that same stretch with a ruler, and do the same for rows up the middle.

2. Plan a project at your gauge

Once the numbers above are yours, size anything flat — a scarf, a blanket, a washcloth.

3. Match a pattern’s gauge

Patterns state gauge like “14 sts and 16 rows = 4 in”. Compare yours to theirs:

Why the middle of the swatch?

The first rows and the outside stitches are always a little tight or a little wavy while your hands settle. Published gauge is measured over the calm middle of a blocked swatch, so measuring yours the same way is what makes the two numbers comparable. If the project will be washed and blocked, wash and block the swatch first — cotton especially relaxes.

Changing size happens at the hook, not by crocheting “looser” on purpose — nobody can hold a deliberate tension for a whole blanket.
