Lace yarn (weight 0)

Lace is weight 0 on the Craft Yarn Council’s scale, the numbering every yarn label uses. You will also see it sold as Fingering, 10-count crochet thread.

The finest yarns and threads. Used for doilies, fine lace, and delicate edgings — usually worked on steel hooks.

What hook to use with lace yarn

The Craft Yarn Council suggests 2.25 mm (US Steel 6, 7, 8 or B-1). Steel 1.4-1.6 mm for thread, or a 2.25 mm (B-1) regular hook. The Craft Yarn Council gives lace these two separately, and notes that lace is usually worked open on larger hooks, so a gauge range is hard to state -- follow the gauge in your pattern. That hook, with its own conversions:

The gauge to expect

About 32–42 double crochet to 4 inches (10 cm) over a hook in the range above. Note the stitch: the Craft Yarn Council quotes every other weight in single crochet and this one in double crochet, because lace is usually worked open on a larger hook than its thickness suggests. Their own footnote says a gauge range here is hard to state — follow the gauge your pattern gives.
