Jumbo yarn (weight 7)

Jumbo is weight 7 on the Craft Yarn Council’s scale, the numbering every yarn label uses. You will also see it sold as Jumbo, Roving.

The heaviest standard weight. Arm-knitting yarns and extreme-chunky blankets.

What hook to use with jumbo yarn

The Craft Yarn Council suggests 15 mm and up (US Q and larger). Every hook in that range, each with its own conversions:

• P/Q — 15 mm
• Q — 15.75 mm
• Q — 16 mm
• S — 19 mm
• 20 mm
• T/U/X — 25 mm
• T/X — 30 mm
• Y — 35 mm

The gauge to expect

6 single crochet or fewer to 4 inches (10 cm) — the Craft Yarn Council quotes this one open-ended, because there is no top end to how thick a jumbo yarn gets.

If you are working from a yarn whose ball band is long gone, wrapping it around a ruler gives 1–4 wraps per inch at this weight. Read that one way only: a weight tells you roughly what you will count, but a count does not tell you the weight — the Craft Yarn Council’s own ranges overlap heavily, so 14 wraps is legitimately super fine, fine or light, and wrapping tension varies between two people counting the same yarn.
