Super Bulky yarn (weight 6)
Super Bulky is weight 6 on the Craft Yarn Council’s scale, the numbering every yarn label uses. You will also see it sold as Super Bulky, Roving.
Very thick yarn for fast, cosy projects — chunky throws and oversized accessories.
What hook to use with super bulky yarn
The Craft Yarn Council suggests 9–15 mm (US M-13 to Q). Every hook in that range, each with its own conversions:
- M/N-13 — 9 mm (UK 00)
- N/P-15 — 10 mm (UK 000)
- P-16 — 11.5 mm
- O — 12 mm
- P/Q — 15 mm
The gauge to expect
About 7–9 single crochet to 4 inches (10 cm) over a hook in the range above.
If you are working from a yarn whose ball band is long gone, wrapping it around a ruler gives 5–6 wraps per inch at this weight. Read that one way only: a weight tells you roughly what you will count, but a count does not tell you the weight — the Craft Yarn Council’s own ranges overlap heavily, so 14 wraps is legitimately super fine, fine or light, and wrapping tension varies between two people counting the same yarn.
